I Remember (dverse prompt-Try to remember...)

I remember

I remember
the day you fell
from your own grace

 yielding to the world
and its dark wishes

swallowing each bitter pill
until the bottle was empty.

Lazy lids, fluttering as memories
fled, filling the room with their
quiet ghosts

I remember how empty
I felt when I realized I
would never see you again.

Saying goodbye is never easy
but that farewell is still
as bare as bone

even as the sun warms
the memory of you.

  1. dang. suicide is another hard memory...one that leaves us with so many questions...like how you use the swallowing of the bitter pill to tell that part of the tale...

  2. Agh. Very sad poem. You use the physical world so well here -- in terms of the writing - describing the room, your feelings, the bare as bone, the sun warming what feels like stone. Thanks. k.

  4. So emotive Lisa. Remembering loss, remembering how it felt when tough realizations were made are memories that live on for sure, and I can feel the wistfulness in your telling. Love the ending too.

  6. Some good-byes are harder than others. Some good-byes hurt forever. This seems like one of those.

  12. A good buy to suicide... that is never complete... and still we want to treasure the bright side of the memories... very strong and sad.

  19. a powerful piece of work.

what i liked about this poem is, with this theme (suicide), it did not get overly dramatic or melancholic. one can feel the loss in those words. Thanks for sharing it.
