We don’t speak of it-
the loss silencing
our world.
How arrogant of the sun
to rise
when we were facing
 the black hole emptiness
 beyond,
not enough breathing space
for our own grieving.
Some pain can’t be shared,
sometimes we are islands
surrounded by restless current
fearing if we were to plunge
we’d breathe in each others tears
and drown.
It was good to love you,
but oh how the earth trembled
when we had to say goodbye.

  2. This poem really made me FEEL. Yes indeed, sometimes we do have to bear things within our own heart.

I think this is my favorite poem of yours that I have read so far.

  3. So moving... I especially like:

    sometimes we are islands

    surrounded by restless current

fearing if we were to plunge

we’d breathe in each others tears

    and drown.

  4. I remember this one and how I felt it epitomized grief so perfectly. I still think so. Wonderful, Lisa.

  5. There are those moments when even the thought of getting close to, talking with or touching another, is more than too much to even consider. Beautifully penned, well executed.

  6. I felt so sad when I read this goodbye. I hope is was only a childhood bff moving with family to a new neighborhood across town, rather than loss to devastating disease. At least then you have the prospect of reunion.

  7. Lisa,

A very nicely composed poem, which affords a very loving tribute through your words.

(I especially connected because of the name Phyllis...the name of my dear auntie, who is thankfully still alive at the age of 87 years and lives alone. Visiting her next week in Northern Ireland:)
