Dad (For deverse 02/27/14 Character)

Red hair, green eyes
thin frame, heavy
of spirit.

Man of honor
held it in,
suffocating on all
he held back.

Loving someone
who never knew
what that really meant.

Had to save the child
many times from the
loveless world she
tried to escape from,
first with church,
then with young love
turned bitter.

Dad-
Drove an old 55 Chevy pickup
battered, it fit like a glove,
tired, yet still on strong legs
they rode off, always returning
to a place, never a haven, always
choking, heart dying from the
choices which never seemed like
choices at all.

Made a bed, he never could
sleep in with any peace, held
the covers wishing, always wishing.

Dying in that bed, dreams
held tightly as he remembered
how hard he tried.

  1. the first part i read with a pretty heavy heart...its hard to hold it all in...it will eventuallly eat you up...the zoom out on the car is nice...i am glad he had a ride that fit him...even if he never came home to a haven..and the acknowledgement he tried...sometimes that is the best we can do....

  2. He tried to love, though at least it was enough where it was noticeable. The ending broke my heart.

  4. I think I see my own father in some of the aspects... especially in the first part... so brutal when you lack the emotional tool... you walk around blind.. this made me think a lot Lisa... thank you.

  7. I really like this poem. Describes a father really nicely, with a very emotionally end.

  9. So emotional . . . suffocating on all he held back and those choices that never seemed like choices at all.
