August (reposted from 2012)

August
by Lisa A.Williams

August
came and
I remembered the
onslaught of things lost
fading in their sun scorched
fields, withering to fall's intrusion filled
with promises of redemption, I breathed in
her solemn splendor, felt summer's sorrow knowing she
would return in her same old lazy way; she
would be unchanged, it is I who would be different.

  1. Lisa, you have really captured the August feeling here...as it withers to fall's intrusion. In some ways it is a sad month, as it is summer's last gasp....even though summer is very much evident, and with us, the days continuing to shorten always gives me pause.

    1. There is a sadness for me as well when August arrives, wish summer lasted a bit longer. Thank you Mary, always nice to hear from you.

the ending line is so strong, and true.

  8. I too like the form. And the sentiment wrapped up in the mixed feelings about August and it's signal to summer approaching its end. In my part of the country, the cool of the night already takes longer to dissipate into the warmth of the day. Change indeed happens. And we all feel it in ourselves.

  10. It's a bittersweet time, isn't it? I hate to see summer end, but then again, I'm ready for school to start back up (kids are too).

  13. "It is I who would be different..." Yes and brava! The seasons SEEM to change, but only one to another... the actual Fall is pretty much the same each year, and our response to winter grows more hostile with every passing year! This was a lovely etheree, Lisa. Amy

  14. This is lovely Lisa you have definitely captured the feel of Autumn,, I love the form as well =). I am not sure if you received my response as you know my writing tends to be dark and I understand having had an abusive childhood that childhood can drag up some painful and terrifying memories so don't worry if your poem is dark. Many of the entries are a little on the dark side actually.
